INTRODUCTION
Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Company is a State Owned Enterprise (SOE) and a sole subsidiary of Pakistan Water & Power Development Authority (WAPDA). The Company has constructed its hydel power station (NJHEP) through diversion of Neelum River having outfall into Jhelum River downstream of Muzaffarabad city. It has installed capacity of 969 MW which, as per estimate, can produce 4.663 billion units of cheap and clean energy annually.
In addition to a composite dam, the project consists of huge underground tunneling network, inter alia, 48 km headrace tunnel, 3.5 km tailrace tunnel, underground power house and underground power transformers. The headrace tunnel crosses under the Jhelum River at the depth of 200 m near Majohi. The water way system consists of 51.75 km tunneling system, comprising of 12.55 km single tunnel and 39.2 km twin tunnel. Two Tunnel Boring Machines were deployed for the excavation of 20.4 km portion of twin headrace tunnels during the construction of the project.
As of Jan 2024, the project is fully commissioned and has contributes over 19.3 billion units to the national grid as per available water resources.
